Fancy Factory has released Kaboomania, a new maze-bomber action game designed for both current platforms and original Commodore Amiga hardware. The studio’s August 13 announcement lists Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch, iPhone, iPad, Amiga 500, Amiga 1200, and CD32 editions. Steam records the PC release on August 12, a one-day difference that likely reflects storefront timing rather than a separate version.
The unusually broad launch is more than a retro visual theme. Kaboomania began as an Amiga project, and the modern editions retain a 320-by-256 presentation based on the Amiga 1200’s AGA palette. Meanwhile, the downloadable Amiga builds have explicit requirements and compromises for period machines. That makes the release a concrete example of developing around old hardware constraints while still reaching players through contemporary stores and consoles.
One design spans several hardware profiles
Kaboomania contains 1,000 levels across five themed worlds, with enemies that use distinct behaviors, collectible power-ups, a single-player campaign, and local competitive play. The Steam edition supports up to four players on one machine and lists full controller support, but it does not advertise online multiplayer. Players assembling a remote group should therefore not assume that the couch mode includes network play.
The two Amiga targets are not identical. Fancy Factory’s itch.io page says the Amiga 1200 version uses 128 colors, while the Amiga 500 build uses 32. The older target also has longer loading, fewer animation frames, no level cache or outro, and lower performance during busy scenes. Without a 68020 processor, its multiplayer mode is limited to two players. These disclosed differences are a clearer account of retro compatibility than simply labeling every build authentic.
Music also needed two production paths
Composer Chris Huelsbeck created the original score, and Fabian Del Priore handled its ProTracker MOD conversion. According to the launch announcement, modern platforms receive a fully produced rendition while Amiga machines use the hardware-oriented MOD version. The composition is shared, but the playback assets are adapted to their targets rather than forcing one audio pipeline across every device.
That choice illustrates a practical lesson for small teams shipping across generations of hardware: consistency does not require identical files. Art, animation, audio, loading, and player-count limits can change while the underlying rules and identity remain recognizable. The important production task is to define those differences deliberately and communicate them before purchase. Fancy Factory does that most specifically on itch.io, where requirements are separated for AGA and OCS Amigas.
What players should check before choosing a version
Steam currently offers Windows, macOS, and Linux builds plus a free demo. Its minimum Windows specification calls for Windows 10, a four-core processor, 4 GB of memory, integrated graphics, DirectX 11, and 250 MB of storage. The itch.io edition costs $9.99 and provides the Amiga and PC route; its page also identifies a free Amiga 1200 demo. The launch announcement says modern console and iOS editions are available, but prices and features can vary by storefront.
Original-hardware buyers need to match the download to their machine. The AGA build targets Amiga 1200 or 4000 systems and recommends extra memory or a 68030 for fluid play on large maps or in four-player matches. The OCS build supports Amiga 500-class systems, with additional memory required for some configurations. A physical boxed Amiga edition is planned, but release details have not been announced, so it should not be treated as part of today’s digital launch.
For indie developers, Kaboomania’s useful achievement is not platform count by itself. It is the visible matrix of intentional tradeoffs behind that count: reduced colors and animation on older hardware, separate music rendering, local rather than online multiplayer, and modest PC requirements. Players get the same core maze-bomber concept, but the inspected sources make clear that compatibility is a set of designed versions, not a promise that every platform behaves identically.
